Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Overview
The draft New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) ADA Management Plan is a summary of how the ADA affects NYSDOT facilities, operations and services, and how NYSDOT complies with the applicable federal regulations through various policies and procedures. This document represents a "self-assessment," as required by 49 CFR 27.11, encompassing Remedial Action, Voluntary Action and Compliance Planning.
The draft NYSDOT ADA Transition Plan, required by 28 CFR 35.150, is a summary of "...physical obstacles in the public entity's facilities..." and a plan for how they will be addressed. NYSDOT began work to develop the necessary inventories and evaluations in mid-2008.
The draft NYSDOT ADA Management Plan was made available for public review in August 2008. The comments received helped guide revisions to policies and procedures, and identified actions needed to improve incorporation of ADA-related considerations in NYSDOT facilities, operations and services. The ADA Management Plan has been revised to reflect the availability of the draft ADA Transition Plan.
The NYSDOT ADA Transition Plan was made available for public review in 2009. Advocacy groups were encouraged to participate in transportation planning and project development processes in all Regional Offices. Comments received were used to help guide the prioritization of upgrades to NYSDOT facilities. An update to the 2009 Transition Plan is underway and a second opportunity for public review will take place in September 2016.
The NYSDOT ADA Management Plan, and the ADA Transition Plan can be downloaded from this site. Paper copies of these documents are also available for review during normal business hours at the eleven Regional Offices.
