The Public Transportation Bureau is dedicated to providing the riding public and municipalities, public transit operators, and other providers of shared ride services with information on a variety of services and funding opportunities. The Bureau is committed to supporting clean, environmentally friendly and safe transportation options to those traveling in shared ride services in the State of New York. Public Transportation, in concert with park and ride facilities and other Transportation Demand Management (TDM) services, can mean less reliance on single-occupant vehicles (SOV), safer vehicles for our aging citizens and individuals with disabilities, and access to transportation for many New Yorkers who cannot or choose not to use a personal vehicle.
The Public Transportation Bureau provides capital and operating funding to urban, rural and specialized transit systems. The Public Transportation Bureau administers and has oversight responsibilities for the Statewide Mass Transportation Operating Assistance program (STOA) and the state matching capital program. The Bureau administers USDOT Federal Transit Administration (FTA) funding programs, including Section 5310 and Section 5311. The state also participates in funding for ferries, transit stations, and amenities such as signs, shelters, bus stops and "next bus" electronic signage.
The Bureau supports and is an active participant in the state's 511NY program for traveler information. If you have questions about the Public Transportation Bureau, please contact the Bureau Director at (518) 457-8335 or PublicTransportation@dot.ny.gov.
