Purpose
The general purpose is to publicly illustrate the TCB conditions that are and are not acceptable on NYSDOT projects. Specific objectives include:
- Allow contractors to evaluate their inventory of TCB to determine which pieces are not acceptable
- Provide guidance to inspectors on what damaged TCB is accepeted and what is not accepted.
- Explain the safety-based rationale for the acceptance standards.
- Describe when repairing TCB may be an acceptable option and how the repairs are to be made.
Background
Temporary Concrete Barrier (TCB) is exposed to the potential for damage, every time a piece is moved, whether being placed in stockpile, loaded on a truck, unloaded at a jobsite, or moved for realignment. The greatest potential for significant damage is when exposed to vehicular crashes. Damage may also be caused by impact from construction equipment.
The amount of damage may vary greatly. When the amount of damage is great enough, safety performance may be degraded.
