The Livingston Avenue Bridge, crossing the Hudson River between Rensselaer and Albany, is a critical link in New York’s Empire Corridor passenger rail line.
This link in the Empire corridor could not easily be replaced by a crossing at a different location.
The Empire Corridor connects the New York City metropolitan area to Schenectady and points west including: Utica, Syracuse, Rochester, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls.
The Livingston Avenue Bridge is near the end of its service life:
The deterioration of the bridge limits trains to crossing one at a time at 15 mph.
The swing span mechanism, which allows taller ships to pass, is unpredictable and continues to deteriorate, leading to increased delays to both rail and marine traffic.
Built more than 100 years ago, the bridge does not meet current railroad bridge design standards.
